Behind the scenes at Northwood Nursing Home

    PUBLISHED: 16/12/2021

Northwood Nursing Home is one of a small handful of nursing homes in the MD Homes Group. We originally worked for this organisation around ten years ago when we refurbished a kitchen on one of their other sites. It is always exciting when a client comes back to you to work on a new project, and we enjoy building strong relationships with our clients.

This was a turnkey refurbishment, so we completed the strip out first and then covered all elements of the build including floors and walls and installing all the stainless steel equipment including canopy and wash area. We were in competition with other catering design and equipment companies but were delighted to win this work.

The key thing about this project was that the nursing home needed to remain fully operational and stay open seven days a week. A temporary catering solution was therefore required. Before the project got underway, we looked at the feasibility of different options with the client including bringing in outside caterers versus a mobile catering unit. The client wanted minimal disruption and to easily be able to provide over 30 residents with three healthy and nutritious meals a day. They opted for the mobile catering unit, so we arranged for it to be delivered into the car park for the duration of the refit.

The timeframe for this project was challenging as understandably the client wanted minimal disruption for its staff and residents but we were able to turn everything around in four weeks. We came across a few small hurdles along the way including damp under the flooring due to a leaking a pipe which hadn’t been visible when preparing the specification, but we overcame everything on time and within the original budget.

When working in the care sector, it’s always heart-warming to know that we are providing a nice new facility for people who need to be looked after. The work we are doing is part of a critical service which makes it extremely important that we work hard behind the scenes so that we create minimal disruption. This project resulted in a fresh facility which everyone is happy with, from the chef to care home manager to the MD Homes directors. We hope to work with them again on future projects within the group.
