Glasswashers: detergent, salt and rinse aid
Glass washer detergents
Commercial detergents for industrial glasswashers are specially formulated to create a low foam, remove tough stains and make the glasses sparkle. Some glasswasher manufacturers will give guidelines on which type of detergent is suitable for the equipment you have purchased.
Don't use a caustic-based detergent in your glasswasher since these can make glasses permanently cloudy, dull or etched, especially at higher water temperatures.
Natural glasswasher detergents are now increasingly available for those who care about the environment. Using a natural detergent means there are no chemicals to leak into the air, atmosphere, or water supplies. Some people question the effectiveness of organic detergents although manufacturers claim these cleaning liquids can wash glasses at lower temperatures and use less water.
Glass washer salt
Granular dishwasher salt is the only type of salt which may be used - it is pure and of the correct consistency. You cannot use normal table salt as it contains additives that can increase the water hardness.
Your glasswasher should be topped up with salt weekly, or according to manufacturer guidelines. Pour in the salt until the holder will take no more.
Glass washer rinse aid
Rinse additive (rinse aid) is a warewashing chemical which helps the water sheet off the glasses rather than collect as water beads or droplets on the surface. It enables a streak free shiny finish, and assists the air drying process.
Always use the same brand of glashwasher detergent and rinse aid for best results.
