Should I buy a new or used glass washer?

Published 15th March 2011

Depends on your budget but we would always recommend a new glass washer since it will have a minimum 1 year warranty and be less likely to break down in the first few years of service.  It is about reliability and efficiency but also your business' reputation depends on it. A busy bar heaving with customers on a summer's day with a broken glass washer is any pub or bar manager's worst nightmare.

Quality brands designed for heavy use commercial environments like pubs, bars, hotels, cocktail bars and clubs will be robust, easy to clean, easy to service, offer outstanding performance and ultimately be reliable.  We deal with a range of glasswasher and dishwasher manufacturers to suit our clients needs and budgets, but from experience our favourites for commercial use are Meiko, Commenda and Maidaid Halcyon

Why shouldn't I buy a secondhand glasswasher?

  • Sourcing parts in the long run may be difficult if the model becomes discontinued
  • Secondhand/used equipment does not generally have any parts or labour warranty - you could end up spending more on maintenance and call-outs than the original difference in price
  • In a commercial catering or foodservice environment you need backup from your suppliers - be it for service and repair, just to ask a question, to buy detergents and cleaning chemicals, or to increase your equipment range when needed
  • It is difficult to know exactly how old a secondhand glasswasher is or how it has been treated by the previous owner, the machine could be at the end of its useful life
  • Replacement pumps can cost over £100 a time - they can fail if broken glass is left in the machine or it is not serviced. Several replacements equals the price of a new machine!

Look after your warewashing equipment!

Another important factor, though obvious, is that you look after your glass washing equipment so you get the best of it. See Chiller Box's top tips and articles on glasswashers and maintenance.
